Bound
to incite the kind of heated debate that characterized response to Neil LaBute's
In the Company of Men, Dean Pollack's Show & Tell takes
the charged topic of date rape and pulls the trigger. Ambitious young actress
Babe Mahler has connived to get her first starring role as the main attraction
on a tabloid t.v. talk show by agreeing to tell her side of a date disaster. But
what Babe really wants is tape, and when the t.v. talk listings hit the newsstand
she finds herself assailed by friends and family with their own agendas. Meanwhile,
the talk show staff prepare to ambush Babe by planting one of their own among
her inner circle. Show & Tell stars Ellen Goldwasser (The
Big Empty) as Babe and Neill Barry, currently co-starring in August
Entertainment's Friends and Lovers with Robert Downey, Jr. and Stephen
Baldwin, as her best friend. Also in the cast are Kristoffer Ryan Winters
(Primary Colors, With or Without You), Susan Sullivan (Dharma
and Greg), acclaimed stage actress Joyce Van Patten, Harriet Harris
(Frasier), and Kevin Scannell (The Player). Indie regular
Sybil Temchen has a featured role and appears next in Larry Clark's
Another Day in Paradise. Pollack
graduated NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988 and has worked steadily since
as an editor of reality t.v. shows and documentary features, including three for
HBO. While still in school he got his first feature gig as second assistant cameraman
on Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It. Pollack's previous post-NYU
film was a documentary Platoon producer Arnold Kopelson hired him
to write, direct and edit on The Making of Triumph of the Spirit. Co-Producer
Franny Baldwin has line produced 10 independent features. Her own short,
Equal Opportunity, screened at Sundance '94. Cinematographer
Shawn Maurer also shot Jack Perez' La Cucaracha, FIRST LOOK's
April selection. Maurer won a Student Academy Award for Leila, a
documentary he made as an undergrad at Loyola Marymount University. His feature
work includes Bandwagon, The Big Empty (Perez' first feature) and
Dennis Cooper's Prep. FIRST
LOOK was founded in 1992 by Eastman Kodak and the Tribeca Film Center in conjunction
with NYFA (the New York Foundation for the Arts) as a distribution and networking
platform for exciting new filmmakers introducing their first features. Discovery
has always been a hallmark of the series as films are chosen by FIRST LOOK before
their debuts on the independent community. Past FIRST LOOK films released in theaters
include Party Girl (First Look Pictures), Denise Calls Up (Sony Pictures Classics),
Late Bloomers (Strand Releasing), Grind (Castle Hill), Pharaoh's Army (CFP), and
Suture (Samuel Goldwyn).
